In
1981 Camel started using Range Rovers for the events. This was the first
Land Rover product that they used. They used the 2 door Range Rover for
two years (1981/1982) See result details at the bottom of this page We
found one in August this year (2004), and it is need of repair and and
good clean. But is a real Camel Trophy Range Rover, which has been
confirmed by Land Rover and Gaydon. There are allot of copy Range Rover
Camels , so that was so nice about finding the (as such ) Camel Trophy
Holy Grail We
believe (well Know) that this is the oldest Land Rover Camel Trophy truck
about. As before the oldest Range Rover was the 1987 ones which are rare
as well. All of the Range Rovers from the 1981/2 events were believed to
have been crushed. But this one was bought by the father of one of the
Holland team. And then him and his son , years later took it around Africa.
And then they left it and was bought by a specialist North east of
Amsterdam, Hans Hocope . Where he kept hold of it in a shed fort about the
past 15 years It
has a Warn 8274 on the front and roof rack with the lights and sand
ladders, and places for the jerry cans. But as in those days , does not
have a snorkel or roll cage. This
how it was when we got it back to the house, as you can see it does need a
bit of TLC
Quite a rare beast, you will see plenty of Camel Trophy Discoveries, and Defenders, but when was the last time you saw a genuine Camel Trophy Range Rover ? - probably never ! Only ever used for 3 events, and at a time when the vehicles were usually scrapped after the events, this particular vehicle was used in Equipment fitting and team trials. It differs from the actual event vehicles in slight detail, such as the internal roll cage was moved after it was found to restrict competitors exit from the vehicle. This one was owned by Land Rover Centre from 1999 to 2001 when it was on display in our showroom. It was bought in 2001 by Mike Robson who has had it restored back to original condition and it is displayed at the new Camel Trophy Museum on his Shropshire cattle estate Mark Griffiths, the Sales Manager at Huddersfield Land Rover, has developed a real talent for finding the rarest, unspoilt and most desirable Classic Range Rovers available- first A208 KLL and now this, a 1986 2.4 VM Turbo diesel, used in the 1987 Camel Trophy, and now most importantly, one of no more than five remaining. Camel Trophy Range Rovers are as you now know very rare. They come from the days in Camel Trophy's history when the vehicles that took part in the event were broken up rather than sold on. The 1987 M.Y Camel Trophy Range Rovers were basically totally standard vehicles, being based around the newly introduced 2.4 VM Turbo diesel engine (first introduced in the Rover SD1 with just 90bhpdue to a smaller Turbo) - a wonderful marketing ploy to prove just how good the Turbo D really was. They were all originally standard R/R colours (This one- C838 WWK, was originally Derwent blue metallic, which coincidentally is not the same as the other blue (Caspian blue) Range Rover in the photo). The story is that when the Camel Trophy finished that year, most of the cars were scrapped. Mark says "To my knowledge the American team event car (D reg sequence of UK number plates) went to America, and ended up being sold to Africa. The UK event car (D reg again) was bought by one of the drivers (George Bee), and it is rough condition - but he still owns it today". For the 1987 event the Range Rovers were equipped with a Warn 8274 winch, roof rack, rear ladder, engine snorkel, 700x16 Michelin tyres, a unique to the event bullbar and the compulsory rollcage- but the mechanical components of the vehicle remained totally standard.
